9.3. Brake shoes of forward brakes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prevention

Brake shoes need to be replaced on two wheels at once - never replace brake shoes only on one wheel. The dust formed as a result of wear of brake shoes contains the asbestos hazardous to health. Do not blow off it by means of compressed air and do not inhale. It is necessary to wear an airy mask during the work with brakes. Do not use solvents on the basis of gasoline for cleaning of brakes. Use only the cleaner which is specially intended for cleaning of brakes.

Replacement

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove a cap of a tank of brake fluid.
2. Turn off nuts of fastening of wheels, lift a forward part of the car and establish it on support. Block back wheels.
3. Remove a wheel. Precautionary measures: It is necessary to replace all four brake shoes of forward brakes at once. Not to mix them, work on each of wheels in turn.
4. Carefully examine a brake disk, being guided by the instructions provided in Section 7. If its surface needs processing, remove a disk, being guided by the instructions provided in the same section. At removal of a disk it is possible to remove brake shoes also.
5. Take away the piston deep into of the cylinder to make room for new brake shoes. For this purpose it is possible to use a clamp. After the piston will be taken away deep into the cylinder, the level of brake fluid in a tank will increase. You watch that it did not begin to flow too much. If it is necessary, pump out a little liquid by means of the pure syringe.
6. On cars supports of two PE54 or PD51 types can be established. In drawings the PE54 model support is shown, however, supports of both types are almost identical, apart from small differences in installation of pins (see rice. Elements of a support of the PE54 model and Elements of a support of the PD51 model). Always clear brakes with use of the clearing liquid before their dismantling.
7. Turn off and get the bolts specified by the top and lower arrows. On a support of a brake of the PE54 model hold pins by means of a wrench when untwisting bolts. Connection of a brake hose (it is specified by an average arrow) does not need to be turned off if only you do not snmat a support for its dismantling or replacement.
8. Remove a support.
9. Suspend it on a suspension bracket spring by means of a piece of a wire; do not allow a support to hang on a brake hose.
10. Remove the top antinoise spring...
11.... and lower antinoise spring; do not forget that on supports of some later models these springs were not established.
12. Remove external laying...
13.... and, if it is established, internal laying from an external brake shoe.
14. Remove an external brake shoe.
15. Remove external laying...
16.... and, if it is established, internal laying from an internal brake shoe.
17. Remove an internal brake shoe.
18. Remove four fixing plates of brake shoes. Examine plates on existence of damages and replace them if it is necessary (good plates have to be latched at installation on the holder of blocks; if they weakened or are deformed, replace them).
19. Remove the wear indicator from an old internal brake shoe and establish it on a new internal block (if the indicator of wear wore out or will bend, replace it).
20. Establish fixing plates of a brake shoe, a new internal brake shoe and laying. Check that the ends of a block were correctly established on fixing plates.
21. Establish fixing plates, an external brake shoe and laying.
22. Establish the top and lower antinoise springs. Check that both springs were correctly established on blocks as it is shown in the drawing.
23. On a support of the PE54 model get the top and lower pins of the holder of blocks and clear them. If Any of rubber covers it is damaged, remove it, having unbent edge of the metal plug fixing a cover.
24. Apply a layer of high-temperature lubricant on PE54 model support pins before their installation.
25. Establish a support and tighten bolts of fastening of a support till the required moment of an inhaling specified in the section of technical characteristics at the beginning of the head.
26. If you had problems at installation of a support on new brake shoes, take away the support piston deep into of the cylinder by means of the With-shaped clamp, and then try again – the support has to be established on blocks.
27. At installation of a support tighten fixing bolts till the required moment of an inhaling specified in the section of technical characteristics at the beginning of this chapter. After completion of work, squeeze out a brake pedal several times for final installation of blocks. Check the level of brake fluid and add it if it is necessary. Check work of brakes before normal operation of the car.
