8.3.1. Replacement of covers of a half shaft and check CV JOINT

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prevention

If you need to touch the hinge (usually because of a rupture of a cover), learn the prices and availability of spare details before work. Perhaps, it will be more reasonably simple to replace a half shaft.

Dismantling

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove a half shaft (see subsection 8.3).
2. Clamp a half shaft in a vice, having put laying between sponges of a vice not to damage it. Check whether is not present at the hinge of an excessive free wheeling in the radial direction that would testify to wear of elements of the hinge. If the cover of the hinge is torn, disassemble the hinge, clear all its elements and examine on existence of the damages which appeared because of work for lack of lubricant or because of hit of foreign objects or dirt.
3. By means of the small screw-driver raise uvulas on collars of a cover and remove them.
4. By means of the screw-driver accurately pick up edge of an external cover and remove it from the hinge. If the cover old or is worn-out, it can be cut. Remove an internal cover from a hinge casing, and then remove a casing from the tripod. Note mutual position of the tripod and a casing then to establish them in initial situation.
5. Note the provision of installation of the tripod in relation to a half shaft in order that the tripod could be installed correctly after removal.
6. Remove a cutting lock ring by means of special flat-nose pliers.
7. By means of the hammer and copper a small beard remove the tripod from a half shaft.
8. If you did not cut off them, remove both covers. During the work on the right half shaft, it is necessary to cut off a collar of a damper of dynamic vibration and to shift a damper aside, previously having noted the provision of its installation.

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER
Carefully clear all elements, including the external CV JOINT, by means of solvent so that to remove all old lubricant from hinge elements. Examine the surface of bearings of the tripod of the internal hinge and an internal surface of its casing on existence of cracks, corrosion, scratches or other signs of wear. It is very difficult to check a condition of a surface of internal and external paths of swing of the external hinge, but it is possible to check a condition of balls. If they as it should be, so it is obvious, surfaces of paths of swing too. If the internal CV JOINT is worn-out, it is possible to buy the new internal CV JOINT and to install it on an old half shaft; if the external CV JOINT is worn-out, it is necessary to replace both its and half shaft (they are on sale only assembled).

Assembly

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Wind vents on the end of a half shaft with the isolating tape for protection of covers (a photo at the left). Put on collars and covers a half shaft, then install on a half shaft the tripod of that by the party on which vents do not reach edge of the tripod (a photo on the right).

Prevention

During the work on the right half shaft do not forget to establish a damper of dynamic vibration and a new collar before installation of an internal cover.

2. Apply lubricant on the tripod and on an internal surface of a casing (a photo at the left). Insert the tripod into a casing and fill the remained space around the tripod with lubricant (a photo on the right).
3. Establish a cover into place, having checked that both edges of a cover got to the flutes. Adjust half shaft length to the value specified in subsection 8.1.
4. Level pressure under a cover having inserted the small screw-driver between a cover and an external path of swing.
5. For installation of new collars bend the end of a collar (a photo at the left), and then bend uvulas over a strip for its fixing (a photo on the right).
